Many people confuse setting the goals with having dreams that you see, but is far distant and cannot be attained. The reason of not achieving the goals can be any of the below mentioned reasons:

  • The goal that is defined is not specific.
  • It is just a dream, but action is not taken

Defining the goal is not an easy thing, it requires time and thoughtfulness to define the goals that can be achievable. This will be the first step to get rid of procrastination.

Following steps can be helpful to plan your life goals that can help you start your journey to reach to your destination.

Step 1- Have a list of your goals ready

The goals are important for you, which are the ambitions that can be achieved, if efforts are made.

Answer the following question in order to know your true goals.

  • What do you want in your life?
  • What are the main things you would like to accomplish in your life?
  • What would it be, that you will regret doing, if you are about to die?

The answers you get will help you to define your goals, remember to define the goals in one sentence. Also, if you think two goals are overlapping or one is the stepping stone for another goal, then remove one of the goals from the list.

Step 2 – Define the time frame for goal accomplishment

This step is important when we talk about 5 years, 10 years or next year plan. The time frame is when we need to decide the time period to achieve the goal.

We need to know the difference between a short term goal and a long term goal. Also, we need to segregate the goals as per time period. This time period depends on in how much time you want to achieve the goals and how much time you would need to achieve the goals.

The goals can relate to health, finance, occupation, career etc.

Short term goals – These are the goals which means the goals need to be achieved in a short time period like 10 minutes, 1 day, 1 week or maximum 1 year.

Long term goals – These are the goals which means the goals need more than 1 year to achieve the goals.

Step 3 – Write down your goals daily

You should write the goal you want to achieve everyday at the top of the paper. It is better if you create a notebook in which you write the content everyday.

For every goal, you should writ specific and measurable statement. You should write what you want to achieve, but you do not have right now. Be as precise as possible and divide the main goal into subparts with the specific timeline.

Step 4 – Write and plan the actions needed to achieve each goal

When you write each goal, you also need to list down the things, actions you would need to do in order to complete each task to achieve all the goals. All these items or tasks will be the checklist for you to achieve your goals. You need to mention the tangible ways to measure how far you have reached in your journey to achieve goals.

This will become your records for success.

If still you do are not able to know your goals, then you can check what to do if the goals are not known.

Step 5 – Write down the specific and realistic timeline

When you have mentioned the action plan, you need to mention the exact timeline, including month and year by which you will achieve the goals. There needs to be fixed completion date that is specific and realistic based on facts.

You should work within this timeline only for the achievement of each goal. Make sure to note these deadlines and complete your task within the timeline.

Step 6 – Schedule your task in the To-Do list

After all this, you know all your goals and timeline. You should now make a schedule of what to do when. Plan the tasks week wise to keep the record of the progress in your goal achievement.

Mention the tasks in your To-Do list by mentioning when to complete which task. To make your to do list, you can also use applications or a calendar.
